WLL Baseball Update

Baseball season is right around the corner! Here’s an update on the 64th season of Little League baseball here in Washingtonville:

Opening Day
Opening Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 23. Like many other leagues in District 19, we chose to avoid the stop and start (and potential disruption) caused by the school’s spring break closure. Many families travel that week, so we didn’t want to risk forfeits or lack of coaches for our younger teams.

Umpires
We’re currently recruiting umpires for our baseball and softball programs. Adults and kids (ages 12 and older) are eligible to ump our league games, with pay starting at $25 per game.

We’re holding an umpire clinic / info session on Sunday, April 10 from 3-5pm at Mays Field for anyone interested. Contact Jarrod Pickens, WLL Umpire Coordinator, at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Team Rosters
Team rosters will be released this week! Your child’s team assignment will be delivered to your in-box and will also be available on the SportsSignUp Play app. Download the app for Android or Apple devices if you don’t have it installed from previous seasons.

Uniforms
Our league provides each baseball player with a hat and jersey (only). Most teams wear gray baseball pants to complete the uniform.

Equipment
All players are encouraged to have a glove and helmet. Most players also have their own bat. T-Ball and Instructional players do not need baseball cleats, but many players do wear them.

T-Ball Schedule
Our T-Ball schedule, which begins on Saturday, April 23, will include a hybrid game/practice twice a week until the end of June. The Saturday session will be held at Mays Field from 10:30am-11:30am. The weeknight session will be held at L Vern Allen Park on Tuesdays from 5:30pm-6:30pm. There will not be a session on Memorial Day Weekend (Saturday, May 28).

Instructional Baseball Schedule
Our Instructional baseball schedule, which begins on Saturday, April 23, will include one game and one practice each week until the end of June. The Saturday session will be held at Mays from 9:00am-10:00am. The weeknight session will be held at L Vern Allen Park on Thursdays from 5:30pm-6:30pm. There will not be a session on Memorial Day Weekend (Saturday, May 28).

Please note that this schedule is different from past seasons because we are including a set weekly practice (players are encouraged to wear their uniforms) and a game each week. We’re confident that this new approach will allow our coaches to better develop their players to get them ready for our (kid pitch) Minors division.

Minors Baseball Schedule
Our Minors baseball schedule will be different this year. Similar to our fall season, we’ve ‘podded’ with surrounding Little Leagues to play a wider variety of teams. This means that you will play about half of your games at Mays Field and the remaining at the fields of neighboring leagues (Chester, Greenwood Lake and Florida).

We have 11-12 players on each roster, so please make every effort to attend games so that our teams do not have to forfeit. If you know in advance that you are unable to play in a game, please make sure that your coach is aware so that they can use a pool player if they drop under 9 players.

Our game schedule will begin on Saturday, April 23, but practices will begin prior to that date to help prepare our teams for competition. Once Mays Field is open, coaches will be alerted and approved for scheduling practices.

As a reminder, there is no set schedule for our Minors division. There will not be a game scheduled on Memorial Day Weekend (Saturday, May 28); practices that weekend are scheduled at the discretion of each coach.

Majors Baseball Schedule
Our Majors baseball schedule will be similar to past seasons. We will be “podding” with Warwick and Greenwood Lake, so please be prepared to travel to their fields for half of your 12-game schedule.

Like our Minors division, we have 11-12 players on each roster, so please make every effort to attend games so that our teams can avoid a forfeit.

As a reminder, there is no set schedule for our Majors division. There will not be a game scheduled on Memorial Day Weekend (Saturday, May 28); practices that weekend are scheduled at the discretion of each coach.

50/70 & Seniors Schedule
We will also be podding for our 50/70 and Senior division teams.

Our game schedule will begin on (or shortly after) Saturday, April 23, but practices will begin earlier than that date to help prepare our teams for competition. Once Mays Field is open, coaches will be alerted and approved for scheduling practices.

As a reminder, there is no set schedule for our 50/70 and Seniors divisions.
